Annemieke Aartsma-Rus was one of the pioneers of developing antisense oligonucleotides for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, starting this work in 2000. This work involved developing and optimizing protocols and cell and animal model systems. Annemieke currently focuses on improving exon skipping for Duchenne and developing exon skipping treatment in an individualized setting for patients with rare neurological diseases.
